I don't think Northerners actually offer any tips on winter driving. You're on your own. It's sort of like riding on a toboggan; you can't actually steer, you're always moving much too fast, and if you get to the bottom of this next hill without running into anything, it was a success. If you do hit something, there's a good chance your insurance company will call you "negligent" (for driving on an icy road) and won't pay a dime. Keep a show shovel in the trunk -- you'll figure it out.

They don't call it the No-No Beach for nothing. We had a beach house at Ocean Isle for 40 yrs (most of my life)...not only do they not allow tents or shibumi shades, they don't allow bikes, dog (except in the dark hours) or alcohol consumption on the beach either. And they WILL give you a ticket if you violate any of their ordinances-they're always out patrolling. Fun killers.

Sadly the last few years our beach holidays are full of restrictions. No easy up or shibumi allowed. No umbrellas in front of the pay for umbrella and chairs which are put so close together no walking through or seeing around to watch the grandkids. Sad to see lifeguards telling parents with infants to take even really small pup tents down. No napping for the little ones. Wonder why it is hard to get enough lifeguards. That said, off we will go to experience another beautiful beach somewhere, new find or old favorite. Full of joy and wonder just to be there making the best of it.

Thanks for reposting this. I'm a new subscriber and love it! I missed the old podcast and was excited to discoverer that you carried on your story telling through NC Rabbit Hole.

As a life long NC resident with grandparents and a brother who live at Kill Devil Hills and who has been living in Wilmington with m y family for the past 11 years.... my two cents of Southern Beach taboo is, "Don't feed thee sea gulls!" Sure, they love cheetos or whatever else you packed for lunch and it can be a rush to feel like Steve Irwin communing with nature but once you feed one, you've invited the swarm and they will give you no quarter.

Thanks Jeremy!

I went to Wrightsville this weekend, usually head to SC, and I saw these everywhere! I was able to drop some knowledge on my friends because of this article. That's for adding to my random fact vault that never helps me win trivia!
